Internet Marketing and Promotion
SEO Cheltenham and SEO Gloucestershire. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimisation and refers to methods used to improve your website so that it has a better listing within major search engines. This primarily revolves around getting better listings in search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Live and so on.
Many people think that SEO is all about getting a number one page ranking in Google because it's the most commonly used search engine, but SEO is more about improving sales and customer base.
Too many people are concerned about getting the top position but even though this is a good thing, we like to focus on improving your business and if we can improve sales this is what SEO is all about. Sales and improving your business is the bottom line.
Your website is a means of exposing your business to potential customers. It can often be a first impression and so it needs to be a good one. Your website needs to show people what it is you do and offer, it needs to be easy to use and get around and people must be able to either make a purchase or be able to contact you easily.
If you have a web site, you want to have the highest search engine rankings possible and you need to be higher than your competition. A web site that looks good might not have a good position in major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Live.com or Ask.com. Getting a good position in search engines can take time and effort and needs constant attention if you wish to retain any high rankings you achieve.

What Is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) ?
Search Engine Optimisation or SEO for short, is the means of optimising your web site so that it ranks highly in major search engines such as Google and Yahoo. It is making sure your web site meets as many requirements as possible set out by search engines. The requirements differ from search engine to search engine, but if your web site is well designed, well worded and provides good information, you stand a good chance of getting a high position. There are of course many other factors that can improve your positioning and we have spent many years learning the tricks of the trade which help get good rankings. Presumably you've found us by doing a search in Google or Yahoo etc and found our web site in one of the first two or three pages and this was possible due to our knowledge of SEO and how to optimise our web site so it gets noticed easily and before our competition.
We provide Search Engine Optimisation services for businesses and home users in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire. The better Search Engine Optimised your site is, the higher the rankings within the search engines and the greater the chances of potential customers finding you.
SEO really needs to start before the web site development process begins as it takes a lot of planning not only for how the web site will be coded and developed but how you wish to market it and how you intend to reach your target market. However, SEO can be performed after a web site has been developed.

Can SEO be implemented on a completed website?
Search Engine Optimisation can still be performed on a web site even if it has been completed. There are many aspects of SEO which do not affect the look of the site. However, one important issue is the text and how it reflects keywords within paragraphs and headings. If your site is all about hotels and you do not use the word "hotel(s)" search engines will assume your site is not relevant to a search about hotels and your listing will be affected. We will, therefore, have to alter or add text to your site.
What Can Cheltenham Computer Specialists Do To Help ?
We have many years experience with web development and have followed web trends and marketing practices for a number of years. We understand web site optimisation techniques and have been offering SEO services for a number of years.
If your web site is not performing well, we can analyze your site and make suggestions on how to improve your rankings through specific Search Engine Optimisation techniques. These techniques could consist of behind the scenes coding of the site or more visible changes to your site which might consist of anchor text, key word density or the creation of links in-bound to your site, or out-bound to others.
We can't however produce a magic wand and get you excellent listings immediately. Any SEO company suggesting they can might use techniques frowned upon by search engines and although you might get good rankings quickly, the techniques used to get you there could ultimately lower your rankings or get your site banned completely.
You also need to have realistic expectations about what is achievable for your web site. If you are a software company, you can't expect to beat the listings for Microsoft, Adobe or Apple for example. What you can do is try to get the best ranking you can by using keywords other sites might not be using and cash in on the traffic they generate.
SEO is never a simple, one time, fix. Good, effective Search Engine Optimisation can take months or work. effective SEO takes constant work and monitoring and there's a lot of trial and error to find out what best works for your site.

How Long Does SEO Take ?
Optimising your web site so that it gains higher rankings in search engines such as Google, Yahoo, MSN or Live can take months of tweaks and tracking to determine what is working for your site and what is not.
Search engines use algorithms to determine which sites get ranked the highest. No sooner have you perfected your site before the algorithms change and you need to do more tweaking of your code and perhaps change the way your site is worded and so on.
High rankings within search engines can also depend on the freshness of your content. If you create a site and leave it alone, other, newer and fresher sites might catch the eye of the search engines and they move up as you move down, and so you need to have someone who can manage or maintain the site to keep it fresh and up-to-date.
SEO is not a short term fix. Yes, we can take a look at your site and make some immediate changes to the way the site has been developed or worded, but SEO, in its purest form, is an on-going task which develops as markets change and as search engines change the way they rank web sites.
We can provide either a short term solution that fixes all your immediate and any glaring errors or we can embark upon a comprehensive SEO / Marketing strategy which can last a number of months.
How Long Before Results Can Be Seen ?
Many factors will determine your web site rankings and the time it takes to make an improvement but for a new web site with a newly registered domain, it can take anywhere between 3 and 6 months.
We once saw a dramatic result with one client who had had a web site for a number of years but hadn't optimised the code. We optimised it and within two weeks they were enjoying first page Google positions for a number of search terms but this is an indication of what is possible and not what can be done for all web sites.
There are many Search Engine Optimisation companies but we will give you an honest opinion about what we can hope to achieve. Anyone who promises a page one ranking within Google is either being extremely liberal with the truth, is basing that on a search term that is almost never used and therefore fairly useless, or they will use "Black Hat" SEO methods which trick search engines into giving you a very high ranking. It looks great for the SEO company and you'll be happy for a while, but ultimately, these tricks will end up getting you banned.
SEO is not an exact science. It takes time and effort. There are no quick fixes ( our example was an exception ) and there is a process of trial and error whereby keywords are tried and tested, changed for different keywords or phrases and so on.

What Else Can You Do To Get Your Web Site Noticed ?
There a number of things that can be done to improve the visibility of your web site and SEO or Search Engine Optimisation can involve implementing issues such as KPIs or Key Performance Indicators to help you track what is doing well and what is doing badly. By this we mean trial and error of keywords or campaigns which work the best for your web site and focusing on those key words or phrases to improve your rankings and search engine position.
PPCs or Pay Per Click campaigns can be utilised through search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN. PPC campaigns involve buying links within those search engines. The small textual adverts which appear down the right side of Google, are paid for adverts and these adverts are free until someone clicks on them and then Google charges you the amount you stated you were prepared to pay to have that advert there. This is called AdWords in Google.
AdWords help your web site get noticed whilst you are waiting for your organic (free) listings to improve. AdWords is an immediate means of getting a good listing within a search engine. However, you are not the only person using AdWords and so it's a bidding game. If you want to get a top advert for a highly sought after keyword such as hotels, you have to bid a higher amount than your competitors in order to get top listings.
AdWords can be used in conjunction with your organic listings. For instance, let's say your web site appears with a high search engine ranking for a number of keywords but it appears low down for one or two other keywords due to competition. You'd then use AdWords to gain a better listing just for those keywords.
You Want To Monitor Your Web Site ?
Monitoring your web site and how people use it and interact with it is free and fairly simple once you know how. Google has a free programme called Google Analytics and it works by adding a small snippet of code to your web site. Once the code is added, you can then start to use Google Analytics which can tell you lots of important information about your site and your visitors.
Google analytics can tell you where visitors come from, how they found your site and through which search engines. It can tell you which keywords are the most commonly used words people use to find your web site. It'll tell you how long they stay on your site, which pages they've visited and whether they are new or returning visitors.
You can even set up goals which can tell you how many people actually get to a point you want them to get to, such as making an enquiry or making a purchase.
Google Analytics isn't the only analytics tool on the market; there are a number but it's the best free analytics tool and works in conjunction with your AdWords account should you choose to have one.
