What Is The Website Development Process In A Nutshell ?

In a nutshell, the website development process is:

  1. Understand your business
  2. Determine target audience
  3. Research the competition
  4. Plan SEO strategy
  5. Develop website implementing SEO

    1. How Much Does A website Cost ?

The cost of designing and developing a website will vary depending on your requirements and the size of the website ( number of pages, images and so on ). How you wish your website to function will also determine costs and then there are other factors to consider such as:

      1. Hosting costs
      2. Website management for updates and changes
      3. Website marketing campaigns ( if any ), such as Pay Per Click advertising through Google
      4. SEO requirements
      5. Any photography costs should you not want to use your own images

      What Makes A Good website?

When the Internet first started and websites were being first developed, they went through various stages of improvements and it was popular to have great looking websites with super looking graphics with moving text and images. The Internet was a hobby and an enigma that people used for fun but now people use the Internet to FIND things. Gone are the days of fancy websites; it's now all about finding a website that is easy to understand and quick to use. People are not interested in being wowed by how a site looks. They want to know whether you can provide the service they are after.

      A website must :

      1. Look professionally made so that it reflects on your professional attitude. It also shows you are a serious business and have made an effort to promote your business. It doesn't need to go any further than that.
      2. Be easy on the eye and state clearly who you are and what you do. If the site doesn't do that, you'll lose potential clients.
      3. Be easy to follow. Users must be able to find what they are after quickly and easily.
      4. Provide all contact details such as phone number, fax number, email address and so on.
      5. Be well written with clear descriptions, no errors or spelling mistakes. Hire a proof reader or a ghost writer if necessary

      How Can We Help ?

We can create you a new website or improve one you may already have. We will employ all the necessary development techniques to ensure you get a website that works for you and your business. We will create your website only after we understand your business and requirements. SEO will be incorporated within the site, but SEO is an on-going process and for us to manage your SEO campaign, we'd have to discuss that as a separate issue should you wish us to SEO your site once it has been completed.

website development is more than just creating a nice looking website with amazing graphics. It is about representing your business and letting people know what you do as soon as they visit your site. They should not be left clicking various links trying to determine who you are.

Visitors to websites are generally impatient. If they visit your site and can't figure out who you are and what you do, they'll leave your site and go to another one. According to Canadian researchers, people can take as little as 50 milliseconds (1/20th of a second) to judge your website. (source: www.websiteoptimisation.com) This means you have to get it right and whereby the visuals can be important, layout and ease of use is also important; as is presenting the right image.

Our web designers will spend time understanding your business before developing the website. Once they understand who you are and what you do, they will then look at your target market and research your competition.

      Why Research Your Competition ?

Researching your competition let's us determine the best way of getting your website noticed. For instance, if your business is a hotel, how can you compete with all the websites about hotels?. A quick Google search of the term "hotels" will offer 504,000,000 websites and so we need to break that down to get your site noticed.

Let's then choose to search for "hotels in England". This offers 550,000 websites which has improved the chances of someone finding your site quite dramatically, but not dramatically enough.

The next search term we can try is "hotels in Cheltenham" which reduces the results even further to 162,000 and we can reduce that further by searching for "boutique hotels in Cheltenham" which shows results for 86,000 websites.

So, by changing our search criteria, we can reduce the competition and even though you might not be a boutique hotel, we need to find a way of marketing your website through search engines such as Google and Yahoo in such a manner that allows your potential customers to find your website more easily; especially if you are a business which has a large amount of competition.

How To Get Your website Noticed

If you don't have a listing on the first 3 pages of the major search engines, there is not much chance of people finding your website unless they already know your domain name ( website address ). In fact, you really need a listing on page 1 as the percentage of people who click through to pages 2 and 3 drops dramatically but getting that page 1 ranking requires careful Search Engine Optimisation ( SEO ) which is the means of getting Google to notice your site and rank it more highly than your competition. SEO is a separate skill for which we have a lot of experience and without good SEO, your website might look wonderful, but no-one will find you.

      Pay Per Click Advertising

Pay Per Click (PPC) is a "quick fix" for getting your website a good listing within Google, Yahoo and MSN.

Let's focus on Google for now but the principles are the same for the others.

A new website or a website with a high level of competition might struggle to get a good listing within Google. You can optimise your website through various SEO techniques, but the nature of SEO could mean the results will not be seen for a few months. Waiting a few months might not be an option especially if your business relies heavily on your website and so you can use PPCs as an immediate and effective option.

What is Pay Per Click ?

Pay Per Click is when you pay for a textual advertisement to appear either at the very top or down the right hand side of a Google search page. To do this, you set up an AdWords account with Google and then create a small textual advert that clearly advertises your website. You then create a list of keywords that trigger the appearance of that advert. You only pay if someone clicks on your advert.

      Pay Per Click Advertising Campaigns

The image above shows Sponsored links at the top of a Google search page (inside the blue box - which we've added) and Google AdWords running down the right hand column of a Google search page (inside the red box - which we've added).

      How Much Does PPC cost?

Pay Per Click is based on bidding on keywords which you want to trigger your advert.

Let's say you want your advert to appear every time someone types in a search for Hotels. This is a popular keyword and many people will be using the same keyword and so you'd have to bid a lot of money (maybe $1 or more) for your advert to appear high on the list. If you bid less than your competitors' your advert will slip down the list. How much you bid can be adjusted daily and so you can trial an error a good bid.
If your keyword is not very popular, you could get away with 5 cents a click.

      PPC Sounds Expensive !

PPCs, can be monitored and regulated very easily. For instance, you can set a daily budget so that you can control how much you spend.

If you set a budget of $5 per day, and you have bid 5 cents per click, you advert will show until your advert has been clicked on 100 times. Just showing is NOT a click. You only pay when someone clicks your advert. Once your budget for a day has been reached, your adverts will stop showing until the next day.

You can also target your adverts so that they show only for the country(s) you wish your advert to be seen. For instance, if you are a hotel and all your customers tend to come from the UK, Europe, USA, Australia, then state that you only want your adverts to appear within Google for those countries. You can eliminate the other countries and not waste money on people clicking your adverts when they probably won't convert into a sale.
